In archaeology one needs to pick through dirt, clay, and even rocks. Since bringing in heavy machinery may damage the artifacts or structures that lie within the earth, a promising trench needs to be picked through by hand.
A pick is a very heavy tool. However, with proper technique you can pick through tough soil using relatively little strength! Thus, a weakling like myself can also wield a pick. Even so, I usually leave the picking to the pros.
This is Peter, a Polish man and our power pick axe-er. He is fabled to have pick axed with one hand in a windmill fashion. He reminds me of a dwarf in lord of the rings (because they have long beard and are miners), except Peter is tall.
